'CORNEILLE' – Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo (1922-2010)

Corneille (Dutch was a painter, draftsman, ceramicist, writer, and graphic artist. Corneille was born as Guillaume Corenelis Beverloo in Belgium to Dutch parents. He was co-founder of the avant-garde, post-war European art movement called Cobra, which was active between 1949 and 1952. The artists in this group drew their inspiration from Surrealism. Corneille is considered to be one of the most significant Modern graphic artists from the 20th century, and has been described as having developed a new poetic art with painting.

Sculpture incised with the artist’s signature on wing of the Cat Bird.

NOTE

With foundry mark Binder Bronsgietery by the shaft. One of an edition of 3 EA (Epreuve d’Artiste), signed on the tail and numbered EA and numbered copies in addition of other limited editions with different sizes and patinas.

PROVENANCE

Private collection, the Netherlands DOCUMENTATION Including a statement by the foundry Binder, dated 24 January 2001, that this sculpture was cast by them, as well as a declaration of authenticity by Nico Koster (1940), which reads: Amsterdam “…The sculptures by Corneille were conceived after a trip of Corneille and myself Nico Koster ± the year 2000 named Katvis, cast at Binder in Haarlem with permission and in the presence of Corneille...”
